AKC Canine Good Citizen

Canine Good Citizen certification through the AKC rewards dogs who have good manners at home and in public. The program focuses on responsible pet ownership for the person and basic good manners and obedience for the dog. 4-H Paws N Pals has chosen the CGC certification process as the first step in training the dogs and members of our club. Canine Good Citizen lays the groundwork for all our other dog sports and disciplines.

I use my Head for decision making, my Heart for loving my dog, my Hands for obedience training, and my Health for feeling great.

Nobody likes a dog with bad manners. Unfortunately, many times the bad manners are a result of pet owners not knowing how to properly train and reward their dog. The American Kennel Club's Canine Good Citizen certification program recognizes dogs that can display their knowledge of basic obedience moves and good manners. All dogs that pass the 10-step CGC test receive a certificate from the American Kennel Club.

4-H Paws N Pals uses the Canine Good Citizen program as the first part of our pet ownership program. Once a member can pass the CGC test with their dog, they have proven their understanding of the basics. From this point, they can further their knowledge and skill level with agility, rally-o, and performance events. The Canine Good Citizen's test is also a requirement in Therapy Dog International's therapy dog testing.

Our club will offer puppy good manners classes and adult dog good manners classes to assist member in getting ready to take the CGC test and to learn how to make their life with a dog fun and not nerve racking. Training for the Canine Good Citizen's test is a great start for your 4-H'er to bond with their dog and build a special relationship that grows over time. Dogs who have a solid obedience education are a joy to live with, make wonderful house pets, and can be taken out into the community with confidence and pride. 4-H Paws N Pals will also be offering our good manners classes and Canine Good Citizen's testing to adults in the community. Please visit our Special Events page for more information on upcoming classes.
